Cross-Species Affective Neuroscience Decoding of the Primal Affective Experiences of Humans and Related Animals

Research in affective neuroscience, led by neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp and colleagues, provides compelling evidence that humans and other animals share fundamental emotional systems rooted in the brain. This study, published in PLOS ONE, explores how core emotional experiences, often referred to as “primal affective states,” are generated by neural circuits that are evolutionarily conserved across mammalian species.
The research identifies several primary emotional systems, including those associated with seeking (motivation and curiosity), fear (threat response), rage (defensive aggression), care (nurturing behavior), panic or grief (separation distress), and play (social joy). These systems originate in subcortical regions of the brain, meaning they are shared across species regardless of differences in higher-level cognitive abilities.
One of the most significant findings of this work is that emotional experience does not require the human neocortex. Instead, it arises from ancient brain structures common to all mammals, indicating that animals are biologically equipped to experience emotions such as fear, joy, attachment, and distress in meaningful ways.
The study also emphasizes that these emotional systems are not merely reflexive responses, but are linked to subjective experiences that influence behavior, learning, and social interaction. This supports the conclusion that animals are not simply reacting to stimuli, but are experiencing internal emotional states that shape their lives.
By demonstrating that emotional systems are shared across species, this research challenges the notion of human emotional uniqueness and reinforces the scientific understanding of animal sentience. It also provides a biological foundation for recognizing that animals can experience both positive and negative emotional states.
