The verse Qur’an 6:165 teaches that humans have been appointed as “khalifa” (stewards or trustees) on the Earth, a concept that forms a central pillar of Islamic environmental and ethical thought. This designation implies that humans are entrusted with the care, management, and protection of the natural world, including animals and ecosystems, and are accountable for how they fulfill this responsibility.
