This modeling study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) examines how global dietary shifts can simultaneously impact climate change and public health. Using large-scale data and scenario modeling, the research evaluates the environmental and health outcomes of different dietary patterns across global populations.
The study finds that adopting more plant-based diets could lead to substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, with estimates ranging up to approximately 70% depending on the scenario. These reductions are largely driven by decreased consumption of animal-based foods, particularly red meat, which is associated with high levels of methane emissions, land use, and resource intensity.
Animal agriculture is identified as a major contributor to climate change due to emissions from livestock, feed production, and land-use change. By contrast, plant-based foods generally require fewer resources and generate lower emissions, making them a more climate-efficient option.
A key strength of this study is its integrated approach, which evaluates both environmental and health outcomes. The findings show that dietary shifts toward plant-based eating patterns could also reduce global mortality rates by lowering the risk of diet-related chronic diseases, including heart disease and certain cancers.
The research highlights that dietary change is a practical and scalable strategy for addressing multiple global challenges at once. Unlike some climate solutions that depend on technological advancements, shifts in food choices can be implemented immediately and at individual, community, and policy levels.
