This large-scale global analysis published in Science evaluates the environmental impacts of food production across tens of thousands of farms in over 100 countries. It provides one of the most detailed comparisons of how different foods contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental indicators.
The study finds that animal-based foods have significantly higher environmental impacts than plant-based foods across all measured categories, including greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and resource consumption. Beef production, in particular, is identified as one of the most emissions-intensive food sources.
Researchers conclude that even the lowest-impact animal products typically exceed the environmental footprint of plant-based alternatives. This suggests that improving production efficiency alone is not sufficient to achieve meaningful reductions in environmental impact without also addressing consumption patterns.
The study highlights the potential for substantial emissions reductions through dietary change. Shifting toward plant-based diets could reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions by nearly half while also freeing up large areas of land currently used for livestock production.
This land could be restored to natural ecosystems, increasing carbon sequestration and supporting biodiversity. The findings demonstrate that food system transformation is a critical component of climate mitigation strategies.
By providing clear, data-driven comparisons, this study underscores the outsized environmental cost of animal agriculture and supports the transition toward more sustainable, plant-based food systems.
